Explanation

In the short film, an African American photographer woman and a Chinese American photographer man, both from Brooklyn, fall in love with each other. In the chosen scene, the couples are covering each other's eyes. This gesture symbolizes the fact appearance and origin matters little to a relationship. Meanwhile, a muffled voice from a phone call is played in the background, which is woman's mom keeps asking her rude and prejudiced questions about the man because he is Chinese.

Connection

The woman's mom insists that the man could do better in China despite the woman telling her that he is from Brooklyn, which shows a xenophobic stereotype. The gist of the video is that love is an emotion, and the woman clearly states that she loves the man for his creativity. Romantic relationships is not about the appearance or origin, but the mutual attraction and spiritual click. The woman's mom represents the people who lack enough knowledge about China or any other Asian or developing country in general and who are prejudiced from stereotypes. This video shows that stereotypes can influence people around one's opinion on one's relationship, which makes it more difficult for one to foster a healthy and longlasting relationship. In this video, people can overcome stereotypes by having strong connections and love for each other in a relationship.
