In the series Demon Slayer, the main mission of the protagonist Kamado Tanjiro (also romanized as Tanjirou) is to slay demons with other Corps members. He is a 13-year-old boy who has lost his family to demons, except his beloved younger sister who has turned into a demon. In a battle with the spider demons, Tanjiro encounters the Spider Mom, who is a subordinate of the cynical and strong lead of all spider demons--Rui. According to the manga, the Spider Mom offers to have her head chopped off because she wants to relieve herself from Rui's torturing tyranny.
Tanjiro is kind, forgiving and determined. His unseparable bond with his sister gives him a unique perspective to view demons. In his mind, demons can have a benevolent yet unfortunate past life as a human, and are thus not as detestable as what other Corps members think they are. His relationship with other Corps members is more difficult to coordinate, because of their different views on others. He often pities and prays for other demons for them to reincarnate as deities or humans. This is related to the themes in "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and The Hate U Give. People often look down upon those with occupations that lacks social status and think they deserve to be despised. This alienates people from forming emotional connections with each other as they expect others to be less valuable as themselves, which is a false stereotype.
